What does it mean to be a Microsoft Certified Partner, and How Does the Program Work?

A Microsoft Certified
Partner is an organization that provides Microsoft-related products or services or support for such. The Microsoft Partner Network is a hub of people, resources, and offerings brought together to give companies what they need to build and deliver successful solutions to their customers.

Microsoft calls its certifications “Competencies.” They are requirements that are designed to meet customers’ specific needs and be recognizable to prospective ones. A partner can be a partner, or they can be Silver or Gold certified. According to Microsoft, these Competencies demonstrate “a specific, proven skill set to customers. Because Microsoft competencies are aligned with how customers buy, customers can easily identify a company’s capabilities and expertise” by looking at their Competencies.

Organizations who join the program begin as Members from which they take certification exams in the technologies related to their target competencies. Some certifications require passing multiple exams, and some exams require months of study and preparation.

Other requirements for achieving Silver and Gold competencies have included the following:

  • Completing client projects using the relevant Microsoft technologies (with verified references)
  • Conducting customer satisfaction surveys
  • Passing Business Assessments and Microsoft Licensing Assessments

What This Means For Our Clients

About 5% of Microsoft Partners worldwide are Silver certified, and only 1% are Gold certified. Both Silver and Gold partners undergo regular audits to ensure they stay current with the latest certifications as technologies evolve.

Because the certification exams are so rigorous, achieving at least a Silver competency demonstrates a high skill level in the relevant technology. Achieving the Gold level requires vendors to always stay up to date, meet the highest possible standards, and have a robust number of qualified team members. Moreover, a Gold partner has direct access to advanced support at Microsoft with the ability to escalate a case when necessary, resulting in faster response times.

As clients evaluate a potential IT partner, they look for reviews, professional assessments, and certifications indicating their skill levels. Ultimately, they want to know whether a vendor has the necessary qualifications. To that end, a Gold partner has demonstrated superior levels of successful implementations, capabilities, and certification as verified by Microsoft.
